SAFE AND SIMPLE
GENERATION OF CHLORINE DIOXIDE FOR WATER
TREATMENT
The HALOX System is a self-contained
chlorine dioxide (ClO2) generator. Using
a patented technology, it provides for
the safe, continuous generation of the
highly effective biocide: chlorine dioxide
(ClO2).
ClO2 is a stable, dissolved gas that
is a strong bactericide and virucide
at concentrations as low as 0.1 ppm.
With minimal contact time, it is highly
effective against many pathogenic organisms
such as Legionella, Giardia cysts, E.
coli, and Cryptosporidium. ClO2 destroys
biofilms and, hence, bacterial regrowth
is significantly impeded. Since it is
a neutral species, it does not form
weak acids (e.g. chlorine and bromine)
and is, therefore, effective over a
wide pH range.
The HALOX System is an electrolytic,
single precursor ClO2 generator. It
does not require acid, chlorine gas,
or bleach. Because of its unique ability
to perform controlled oxidation, The
HALOX System generates a very pure product
at a surprising low cost.
The heart of The HALOX System is a patented
technology, which directly oxidises
sodium chlorite to chlorine dioxide.
Operation is controlled by a menu-driven,
keypad activated microprocessor mounted
on the front of the cabinet. The system
is completely self-contained.
APPLICATIONS
Cooling Towers
and Loops: Cl02 controls algae,
planktonic bacteria and biofilm.
It also removes taste and odor
components as well as halogenated
disinfectant byproduct precursors
e.g. trihalomethanes (THM's).
In post-treatment, it provides
a lasting residual throughout
the distribution system. Cl02
is also ideal for small water
supplies, cisterns, and hospital
water systems. Cl02 does not form
THM's or haloacetic acids (HAA's).
Food and Beverage:
Cl02 provides excellent microbiological
control in flume waters, packaging
operations and pro-cess disinfection.
Thus, it is ideal for the washing
of fruits and vegetables (FDA
approved) as well as bottling
and brewery applications. Cl02
does not react with most "organics"
in flume water, which makes it
a very effective disinfectant.
It also neutralizes foul smelling
secondary and tertiary amines
formed in the meat packing industry.
Waste Treatment
and Odor Control: Cl02 safely
oxidises phenols, cyanides, aldehydes,
amines, and mercaptens, reduced
sulfur compounds and some pesticides.
It is useful in both waste treatment
maximum efficiency of heat exchangers
and ancillary equipment. Cl02
is more stable than other oxidising
biocides and therefore, is compatible
with most water treatment chemistry.
This "selective oxidation"
also makes Cl02 ideal for systems
with corrosion problems.
Potable Water:
Cl02 is EPA-approved for both
pretreatment and final disinfection
of drinking water. In pre-treatment,
it effectively removes iron and
manganese.
Cl02 Production
The HALOX System delivers an on-demand
chlorine dioxide solution at an easily
handled concentration (500 to 600 mg/L).
This allows for continuous dosing, eliminating
the need for storage tanks and dosing
pumps. The average conversion of the
sodium chlorite precursor is 75% and
the power consumption is only 100 watts
per 5 gram/hr capacity. The process
is available in two configurations.

Control and Safety
An internal timer or a remote controller
such as an ORP or water meter can control
The HALOX System. In addition to the
intrinsically safe nature of the system,
there are built-in safety features in
the unlikely event of component or system
failure. An internal leak detector within
the unit shuts down production of Cl02
then switches on halogen lights to destroy
any liberated vapours and locks the
cabinet door until any potential hazard
has dissipated. The system also monitors
for low feed-water pressure, low precursor
chemical, and electrical diagnostics.
A locking door and "key pad lockout"
are included as security measures. The
precursor solution and the Cl02 product
are very safe and stable.
Analysis
Of Cl02 Residual
There are two relatively simple techniques
for determining Cl02 residual concentration.
The well-known DPD (N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine)
method can be made specific to Cl02
by adding a small amount of glycine
to the sample before the other reagents.
The CPR (chlorophenol red) method specifically
determines Cl02 concentration based
on its ability to convert CPR to a colorless
product. The amount of CPR that is bleached
is proportional to the Cl02 concentration.
Detailed analytical procedures are available
from HALOX Technologies Corporation.
Conclusions
Cl02 has long been recognised as the
ideal biocide for numerous applications.
However, traditional generation technologies
have precluded many potential users
from its benefits. For the first time,
The HALOX System makes Cl02 available
to anyone who wants it! Please contact

benefits of our innovative new product.
