INDUSTRIES

Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cations (positively charged atoms) in hard water. The resulting soft water is more compatible with soap and extends the lifetime of plumbing and appliances, because the substances that cause calcium build-up (scale) have been removed.

Primary Applications

  • Boiler feed applications
  • To remove scale build up on commercial cooking elements
  • To pre-treat reverse osmosis feed water to prevent fouling of reverse osmosis membranes.

The Process

Our water softeners use ion-exchange resins and the process involves passing water containing hardness ions, namely calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) through a column containing a strongly acidic cation exchange resin in the sodium (Na+) form (i.e. the exchangeable cations are sodium). The calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for an equivalent number of sodium ions. The resin, once exhausted, (i.e. all the available sodium ions have been exchanged) must be re-charged. As the Cation resin is in the sodium form, salt (Nacl) is used as the regenerate.

Our water softeners range from residential to large-scale industrial and municipal systems and are fully automatic and are supplied as a complete unit with brine drums, inlet & outlet connections and SMART controllers for initiation of regeneration of the resin.

In addition, they are an integral part of the design of our integrated water purification systems.
